The Capacity and Capability Pyramid

Building capacity and capability before it is needed to achieve organizational objectives is a necessary process. An useful metaphor is that when a driver of a car steps on the gas to pass a car and there is no capacity to increase speed there is a risk of not achieving the objective or having a deadly collision with a car coming from the opposite direction. The continuing long-term success of a company is determined by its capacity to optimize its human resources, and thus increase the effectiveness of the entire organization. At the same time it must allow for innovative solutions in an ever-changing business environment.

The Capacity and Capability Pyramid is a robust macromedia model that provides a framework for the maturing your organization in a logical, effective manner. The base of the pyramid represents Strategy. The sides of the pyramid four major perspectives (which impact each other) which have different maturity stages:
  • Technology Perspective
  • Design Perspective
  • Process Perspective
  • Practice Perspective

The Engine of Success
Other aspects of the pyramid illustrate the necessary balance between strategic, management and operational perspectives to achieve chosen objectives. Wrapped around the pyramid is a change module that illustrated how each level of development of a company has different change issues from the stage preceding it. iCapBiz uses the metaphor of climbing a challenging mountain to help decision-makers understand that:
  • A sound strategic (vs. tactical) plan dramatically improves the chances of an initiative succeeding. i.e. management and operations are severely constrained by bad strategies that do not fit the internal capacities and capabilities and the external environment (e.g. demand for a product or service).
  • Clearly communicated and aligned strategic, management and operational objectives is necessary to achieve reaching the summit of an initiative. A mountain climber needs a good strategy to be able to manage and take effective action while on the mountain.
  • Resource (time, people, physical resources) allocation is dependent at the stage of development of an organization i.e. investing in technology that workers cannot use is usually a negative decision.
  • The more evolved an organization the more resources are required to improve performance. Choosing how high the organization wants to reach is an important decision that needs to be considered using a T.O.P. multiple perspective approach:
  • Technical Perspective – does the organization have the necessary skills and physical resources.
  • Organizational Perspective – is the culture of the organization (for example) or team aligned with the objective(s)
  • Personal Perspective – are key leaders aligned with the culture and the stated objective(s)

iCapBiz teaches a company how to progress up this pyramid in a fashion that is explicit and long-lasting. We analyze the level the company is currently functioning at and then help them build a path that will increase overall business capacity and capability. It is imperative that a company start building capacity and capability at its current functioning level. Often trying to achieve optimization too quickly is doomed to failure because the capacity for sustainability is not built and in place. Each level of the pyramid must be progressed through in order for long term goals to be met.

The Path-lign Process™, the Path-ligner mapping software and the Path-ligner Critical Thinking and Alignment Tool are designed to help analyze a company's current state of capacity and then build upon its strengths. In this manner as the company improves and expands its capacity levels it is able to achieve and sustain higher quality output from its human resources. In addition it is able to capture the tacit knowledge of these people and pass it along to others.
