There are two dynamic systems that impact alignment of an organization: external realities and internal productivity. Misalignment between the two systems (and within the two systems) causing a drop in demand. Understanding the external realities (how the organization will relate to its customers and how it will thrive in the marketplace) often determines how to align internal performance resources. It is the exception that an organization can be effective in changing the external environment to align with their internal behavior. Understanding the external realities should be one of the core competencies of an organization i.e. continuously researching, monitoring and responding effectively to feedback from the external environment.
