Business organizations and teams, as described by Drucker in his book "Managing in a Time of Great Change", can be loosely placed into one of three analogous team sport settings: Baseball Teams; Football Teams, and Tennis Doubles Teams. A particular business environment will require at least one of the three types of teams to be in place as a management system.

Businesses that require a high degree of individual craftsmanship can be compared to the baseball team. Each member must perform a particular task or position in order for the entire team to be successful. There is a small amount of crossover of players, but generally each player has a specific position and does not go into action until the ball is hit to that position. And each person at bat is a solo artist, without the benefit of a teammate's help when they are up. A surgery room would be analogous to the baseball team. Each person performs a specific task or set of duties, but seldom do the nurses take over for the doctor in the midst of open-heart surgery.

A football team, on the other hand, is made up of individuals who, although they have individual positions, must also be flexible enough to cover and change positions as the need arises. Blocking a ball carrier, trying to sack the quarterback, or picking up and running with a fumbled ball. In our medical scenario this would be the same as an emergency room team in a hospital. Each person has a specific job or task, but because the situation is more fluid they must be able to cover each others position and be flexible enough to adapt to changing situations with little notice.

In a tennis doubles team each player must be able to cover for their teammate. There is a high need for awareness of not only what is happening on the court, but what your teammate is doing as well. The interplay of environment and coordination must be executed well in order to be a good team and flawlessly to be a winning one. In business environments where knowledge, innovation and flexibility are key, this is extremely critical.

Using the wrong business strategy, no matter how masterfully it's done, will not optimize your company's capacity. The first step in any process is to determine what type of strategy (or combination of strategies) is needed. The second step is to analyze the capacity needed to achieve your company goals and then how to enact those strategies in a consist manner over time. It is neither a quick nor easy process, but it builds long lasting results and the ability to adapt to any changing business environment.
